Admiring Andalusian scenery in our weekly off road excursions / Admiram peisaje andaluze in incursiunile noastre saptamanale off road.

Going to concerts and fairies / Mergand la concerte si ferias.

Discovering new and amazing places near our village/ Descoperind  locuri noi si interesante in vecinatatea satului nostru.

Preparing great deserts from our own fig production /  Preparand deserturi din productia noastra proprie de smochine.

And not at least, living a great life / Si  nu la urma, traind o viata grozava.

Fig season / Sezonul smochinelor

Summer is here and I have figs to prove it.  Few years back we planted a fig tree along the house and now, every  summer, the beautiful  and luscious plant is gifting us with  hundreds of  juicy and sweet fruit.  Unfortunately all  in a 2 week period  time – if that. So here we are, end of June  all of us  “gulping pounds and pounds of  “brevas” (how the locals call them) in a short period of time. Of course every time we think we got ahead, we discover more crop hiding behind leaves.

When we say “all of us” this includes the dogs too. They absolutely  love the fruit and luckily there is enough for everyone  big and small.

We decided to make some fig ice cream and everybody agreed it was the best one we ever made. *************************************************************************************************************************Ne-am decis sa facem inghetata si toti au fost de acord ca a iesit cea mai buna din ultimii ani.

Gran Hotel Miramar, Malaga

Many years ago (to be precise, 21) one of us, a young student visiting Malaga, came across this building … In those days, it was the Regional Court of Justice. It was obvious to him that this beautiful building was much more than a court. “It has to become a Grand Hotel!” was the first thought. A thought that never let him go from that moment on.

After Malaga inaugurated the new “Palace of Justice”, the building was sold. It experienced 6 years of  inactivity, and many of us thought this beautiful palace will just decay.  The big news of the year is that, at last, the work to transform it in what should be, the most beautiful and luxurious hotel in the area, are starting in less than a month. The news is gorgeous: not only that they want to recover it, they also can!

We can’t wait to see it when it’s finished!

In acele zile, era un tribunal local.

Getting ready for the summer / In asteptarea verii

Now, that spring is finally here, it seems the work around the house never ends. For the past few weeks I cleaned the yard, I took out the garden furniture and the potted plants from the greenhouse,  I pulled out 2 huge garbage bags full with weeds,  I power washed the terraces,  I started an herb garden, and my husband applied weed killer and insecticide over the garden, trees and walkway.  Ah and I almost forgot,  my favorite cleaning activity, washing windows…. just kidding of course. Lots and lots of work and we are not ready yet, but in the next couple of weeks everything will be set for the summer as always. Few days ago, I scrubbed the outdoor kitchen and I couldn’t help not to brag about it.  Our outdoor  wood burning oven cooks the best roasted chicken and lamb, the cast iron griddle makes the juiciest grilled meats and vegetable and the chairs and table just invite us to enjoy relaxing moments around it. Of course the view surrounding us is just a bonus we always take pleasure from.

Semana Santa / The Holy Week / Saptamana Patimilor

Dear friends,

sorry for the long break, we’re preparing something new for you … in the meantime, we would love to share with you our latest impression of the “Semana Santa” in Malaga, the “Holy Week” here in our city. In our opinion, this week is the most important and most impressive week of the year, in a region that (as you might know) is truly not poor in gorgeous impressions …

With a tradition of more than 500 years, more than 40 “cofradias” (religious brotherhoods) are performing incredible processions throughout the entire old city. They carry two “tronos” (thrones) with Jesus and Mary for up to 12 hours! and if you don’t realize the dimension of the effort, just take some figures into account: each throne has up to 8 tons (16,000 lbs) of weight and is carried by 180 – 240 men. That makes up to 40 kg / 80 lbs per man. Impressive, what?

We’re not religious, but we do have to acknowledge and respect the incredible effort of these persons, also taking into account not only the physical effort itself, but also the many months of preparations, planning and training for this so special week of the year.

Anyhow, we leave you with a nice video, showing some stunning images of this truly impressive week!

Dragi prieteni,

Country style cooking Festival

Next weekend, our beautiful and welcoming village is going to be the host of the 3rd edition of Country Style Cooking Festival. For € 2.50 a food sample and a drink, 16 restaurants and bars are going to serve traditional food made with local, fresh ingredients. Cheese and olive oil sampling will be available at certain restaurants, and the township will organize different activities in and around the village. Guided tours to the “Penas de Cabrera” cave or to the historic olive tree which was named the most beautiful olive tree in Spain in 2012, are just few, very few fun activities prepared by the  locals for their visitors. Wild asparagus soup, code fish with tomato preserve, broad bean pie, or fried milk as desert are just some dishes waiting for us this weekend. Will return with photos and stories as soon as we have them.

Branza si ulei de masline vor putea fi degustate in anumite restaurante iar primaria va organiza activitati diferite in si in jurul satului.

Ventorillo Patas Cortas Restaurant

Build around time America was discovered, (1492) Ventorillo Patas Cortas is one of a kind place with secret passages and tunnels, lots of myths and horror stories. History was very daring, and legend says that Cervantes while working as a tax collector stopped at this old inn on his way to Malaga, passing the ancient Zambra tower. Our friend Miquel, the actual proud owner reopened the place a couple of months ago and we were more then thrilled to have such a great restaurant just a mile from home. The delicious homemade food, the welcoming atmosphere and not at least the uniqueness of the place make us go back happily for more quality food, and priceless time spend together with dear friends.

New blog appearance / Schimbare de infatisare a blogului

We don’t know how you feel guys, but time is flying here for us at “El Mirador”.  The months seem weeks, weeks, days and days just hours… We suppose this happens when  winter outside is a mild one, when sun is out almost everyday and when we spend quality time with your friends around the table or with our loving dogs around the fireplace. Among many things we did lately here around the house it  was to change our blog appearance. We hope you like it.

What else can be more pleasing and satisfying that a nice and quiet dinner at home shared with the loved one? Maybe a tasty glass red wine in front of the fireplace watching a tear jerker movie…Anyway, tonight we  splurged on some  delicious juicy Spanish oysters and some oven baked herring over a bed of potatoes. It seems that we weren’t the only ones happy about this food choice.
